Medias Puri
This week
The club
Medias Puri sits in the basement of the former Teatro Nuevo Apolo, at number 1 on Plaza de Tirso de Molina. The theatre opened in 1932 as Teatro Progreso, with the zarzuela La verbena de la Paloma, and is now called Teatro Apolo. Beneath its stalls there was once a nightclub and cabaret called Yulia, and later a wedding hall. An attempt to bring it back as a club in 2014 came to nothing.
Medias Puri opened in spring 2017. The entrance looks like an old neighbourhood haberdashery and the party happens in the back room, decorated in 1980s style. It is run by Letsgo, the company behind The Hole shows. There are three rooms: the Central, with live performances; the Black, for urban music; and a third one for karaoke. It holds around 1,000 people. The company's performers work among the crowd, with no fixed stage, and do their acts in the corners. There are reserved tables with a bottle for groups of four to seven.
Which night to go
It opens on Fridays, Saturdays and the night before public holidays. Doors open at 23:59, entry starts at 00:20 and it closes at 06:00. There is no named party for each night: the house sells ‘the Night’ and releases dates gradually. On Saturdays from 18:00 there is Los Petardeos, the house afternoon party, aimed at over-30s although the minimum age is 18. At 23:00 the lights go down and the night begins.
The music
Each room has its own sound. The Central plays current hits, commercial tracks and sing-along classics, broken up by the show's acts. The Black is urban music, mostly reggaeton. In the karaoke room the crowd does the singing. At the Saturday afternoon party it is karaoke, 80s hits and classic reggaeton. The resident DJs play every night.
Getting there
Tirso de Molina metro, on line 1, is a one-minute walk: the club is on the same square. For Cercanías trains, the nearest station is Sol, on lines C-3, C-3a and C-4. Daytime buses stop nearby: the 65 at Benavente and the 17, 18, 23 and 35 at Plaza Mayor. At night, the night bus N26 stops at Plaza Mayor, about 400 metres away.

The club says it has no specific dress code: any outfit needs the door staff's approval. Flip-flops are not allowed, nor are costumes that bother other people or get in the way of the shows. You must be 18 or over and bring your DNI, NIE or passport.
